LOCATION & CLIMATE Camping Vrijhaven Heeg lies on the Heegermeer in the province of Friesland, between the villages of Heeg and Gaastmeer. The Frisian lake district is a unique low-lying peat landscape with hundreds of lakes, ponds and waterways that are all connected — a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers.
NATURE The Frisian lake district is made up of vast stretches of water, green dykes and wide-open polders. The campsite borders directly on the Heegermeer, one of the largest lakes in Friesland. Rare birds nest around the lake and the countryside breathes peace and space.
ACTIVITIES Sailing, paddleboarding, windsurfing, sloop boating and canoeing straight from the jetty. Cycling through the Frisian countryside past windmills, historic farmhouses and charming café terraces. Eel fishing with the last professional eel fisherman in Heeg. The UNESCO-listed Wouda Pumping Station within cycling distance.
CULTURE Friesland has its own language, culture and identity. Sneek (10 km) is the beating heart of the region, with the famous Weduwe Joustra Beerenburg and its historic town centre. Hindeloopen, Workum and Stavoren are authentic Frisian towns with a rich maritime history. The Elfstedenroute takes you past eleven historic Frisian towns.

Friesland is Europe's watersports mecca, with endless lakes, Frisian villages and its own language and culture. Sailing, paddleboarding and boating are all completely normal here.
Absolutely. Friesland is also beautiful in May and September — quiet, green and ideal for cycling along the lakes. Long-stay discount valid from 1 April to 3 July and 29 August to 30 October.
