The Dolomites After the Winter Games: at Least as Beautiful in Spring
In this article
The Dolomites, watched by the whole world
During the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, the whole world watched the impressive Dolomites. Snow-sure mountain passes, spectacular descents and the iconic mountain backdrop around Cortina d'Ampezzo showed just how special this region is. But anyone who thinks the Dolomites are a winter destination only might be missing the most beautiful season of all.
Why spring is the most beautiful season here
As soon as the snow melts, the landscape slowly transforms. Blooming alpine meadows, quiet walking trails and clear mountain lakes make this a wonderful time to discover the Dolomites in peace. Temperatures are pleasant, nature comes to life everywhere, and the trails that get busy in peak season are often yours alone.

Straight into the mountains from Veneto
Veneto runs from the peaks of the Dolomites down to the Venice lagoon, and in between lies a landscape of mountain lakes, wine-covered hills and old towns. Our two campsites lie in the north, where the mountains begin. From there it's a short drive up into the heights for a walk with a view, a cycling trip, or a day in one of the characterful Italian towns at the foot of the mountains.

Camping Gajole: peace on the Lago di Corlo
Not far from the areas where the Winter Olympics events took place lies Camping Gajole, near Arsiè in the province of Belluno. A small-scale nature campsite on the Lago di Corlo, run by sisters Danielle and Doris Turra. From your lodge you look out over the lake and the surrounding mountains, and your own little beach is five hundred metres away.

Walking, canoeing and paragliding
The area around Arsiè is made for walking and mountain biking in the Dolomites, swimming and canoeing on the lake, and for the more adventurous, even paragliding. There's no organised entertainment, but there is a playground, table tennis and archery. Just bear in mind that the lake's water level drops from mid-September.

By train to Venice, for twelve euros
Bassano del Grappa is thirty-four kilometres away, around a thirty-five-minute drive. From there you can take the train to Venice for about twelve euros, a journey of roughly an hour. That's a lot more pleasant than driving into the city yourself and looking for a parking space.

Five types of lodge on one campsite
Gajole offers the widest choice of all our campsites: the Coco House for four people from fifty-nine euros, the Base Lodge for six from sixty-nine, the Big Oak Lodge in two sizes, and the Desert Lodge for six. Some with a private bathroom, some without, so you choose how much comfort you want.

Camping Al Lago di Lago: right on the lake
A little further south, on the edge of the Prosecco region, lies Camping Al Lago di Lago in Tarzo. This relaxed family campsite sits directly on a small mountain lake where swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking come naturally. The water starts fifty metres from the campsite, and there's also a swimming pool with a paddling pool.
Prosecco, and that's a World Heritage Site
Tarzo lies right in the middle of the Prosecco DOC region, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. A tasting at a nearby vineyard is easily arranged. The greengrocer comes round the campsite several times a week, and a restaurant and snack bar are just a hundred metres away.
Venice, Belluno and Cortina within easy reach
From Al Lago di Lago, Venice is less than an hour away, Treviso and Belluno forty minutes, and Cortina d'Ampezzo seventy-five. Lakes, mountains, culture and prosecco all in one place, and that's exactly what makes this corner of Veneto so versatile.
When to go
For walking and peace and quiet, May through to June is loveliest, and September is too. July and August are the busiest months, though these two campsites stay manageable even then. The swimming pool at Al Lago di Lago opens, depending on the weather, at the end of May or the start of June.
A lovely, peaceful spot. We have a front-row pitch with a great view of the lake. Facilities are good. One shower room: 3 showers with a shower curtain. You undress and dress outside of that. I really enjoy it! Nice water points, with a sink, spread across the campsite. A path takes you straight to the lake.
